Ford Engine Age Tables
The data used for these tables has been collated with the help of other kit car owners passing details of their engine age identifiers and dates of manufacture to me. From this information, I noticed patterns in the data and was able to complete the tables below. I believe the information to be correct, but cannot provide any guarantee of accuracy. If there are any errors with this information, please let me know.
For SVA purposes, you will require written proof of the date of engine manufacture. To obtain this, either send a letter or a fax, including the engine type and engine number to the Ford Technical Information Centre at the following address:

To find the age of your engine, you will require the engine number. This is of the form LL NNNNN where LL are two alphabetical letters and NNNNN are five numbers. Look up the letters in the tables below to find the date of manufacture.
Please note that it is possible that a letter combination can indicate more than one date. For example SL gives a manufacturing date of either September 1976 or May 1995. From the type of engine, you can quite easily work out which date is correct. In this case, the SL identifier came from a 2.0 Zetec engine, so the date of manufacture was May 1995.

August 1995 - 1999
If you find that your engine was manufactured on or after 1st August 1995, due to changes in the emissions regulations, you will need to fit a closed loop ignition system with a catalytic converter in order to pass SVA emissions tests.
